5 Back-to-School Mysteries and Thrillers

Back-to-School Mysteries and Thrillers

It’s that time of year again … when parents everywhere breathe a deep sigh of relief as they no longer are in charge of keeping their youngsters busy for a good eight hours a day.

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun if us adults went back to school, too.

The following five mystery and thriller books all have one thing in common—they revolve around school one way or another.

Take a look (after all, with the kids back in school, think of all the time you’ll have to read!).

Wondering what to do with all your free time now that the kids are back in school? Check out these 5 back-to-school mysteries and thrillers. Share on X

1. The Perfect Roommate by Minka Kent

This is a strange psychological thriller told from the point of view of a very unstable college student who finds herself a (you guessed it) roommate.

No spoilers, but if you like psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators, this one may be up your alley.

2. Little Monsters by Kara Thomas

This is a psychological thriller that I thought was going to be some sort of ghost story.

It starts with a séance gone wrong, and I assumed it was going to continue in that vein. Instead, it surprised me and turned into a psychological thriller that’s pretty rooted in reality. I’ll post a full review later on.

3. The Punishment She Deserves by Elizabeth George

You can check out my full review here, but in short, when a deacon is murdered, it’s a group of college students who end up being in the center of the investigation.

4. Christine by Stephen King

Ah, the classic love triangle gone bad … plus, an evil car.  This is Stephen King’s classic story of  the car’s torment of three high school kids.

Yes, yes, I get that Carrie is probably his most famous high school horror story, but quite honestly, it’s probably one of my least favorite Stephen King books. If you haven’t read this one, it’s worth it to check out.

5. The Stolen Twin by Michele Pariza Wacek

My first published novel AND my first bestseller, this story centers around Kit Caldwell, college student party girl full of secrets.

One Halloween night, it all comes to a head when someone who appears to be her missing twin sister Cat appears at a party.

But is it really Cat?

This one’s got a little bit of everything—mystery, romance, and even a little humor. Check it out here.
